“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” fell behind “Garfield The Movie” globally, earning $33.3 million from 75 regions, as opposed to the latter’s success.
Director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic saga’s fifth installment, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Story,” garnered a global box office of $58.9 million in its opening weekend, considered a challenging start given its $168 million production budget.
How Much $?
Warner Bros.’ prequel film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Sony’s animated film “Garfield” are fiercely competing for the top spot. Both films earned approximately $25 million over the weekend and reached $31 million by Monday.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” will struggle to match the success of its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which grossed $380 million against a similar large budget, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. While the film, featuring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in prominent roles, received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences, it did not garner as much praise as “Mad Max: Fury Road” and thus failed to transcend beyond its core fan base of older male cinephiles.
Around The World
Outside the US and Canada, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” had its strongest start in Korea with $4.5 million, followed by France ($2.6 million), the UK ($2.5 million), Mexico ($2.4 million), and Australia ($2.2 million). IMAX screens contributed $4.7 million internationally, making up $9.5 million of the global box office sales.
“Garfield” has been leading in worldwide ticket sales, reaching $91.1 million since its international release weeks ago. Voiced by Chris Pratt, the famous orange cat who loathes Mondays, “Garfield” cost much less than “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” with a budget of $60 million. It ranked third in the international weekend box office with $14 million from 51 overseas markets. “Garfield” has yet to premiere in several major markets such as Japan, France, and Australia. Its biggest markets so far have been Mexico with $17.4 million and Germany with $5.2 million.
